7 Reasons to DIY with Essential Oils

7-reasons-diyDIY is a pretty hot topic these days with search engines returning over 27 million results. I don't really have the mental space or time resources right now to make a new headboard or upcycle our Foosball table, but I do have a couple quick minutes here and there to throw together a sugar scrub or counter-top cleaning spray enhanced with essential oils

  1. Versatility
Once you start exploring the ingredients in most DIY recipes, you'll start seeing similar ingredients pop up. It turns out that my homemade dish liquid also makes a great spot treater, and our go-to sunblock doubles as a skin salve and diaper cream.
  2. Affordability
Because the ingredients I use often come in bulk, tend to be affordable, stretch a long way, and have multiple uses, our DIY projects, from cleaning to body care, cost way less than store bought products. We also get to reuse the containers which cuts out an additional cost.
  3. Safety
With so many kids running around, safety is always a top concern. I'm also a fan of reducing our family's toxic load. I like ingredients that I can pronounce in my food, cleaning and household products, and body care. My favorite DIY recipes usually have 3-5 basic ingredients that are minimally processed and often are safe even if accidentally ingested. The essential oils we add to our recipes come from doTERRA who has less than 0.007% adverse reaction reports in their entire existence.*
  4. Effectiveness
Sometimes it takes a little tweaking or trial and error, but we have not traded effectiveness for other DIY benefits. In fact, I prefer my face and body sugar scrub to any shower gel I've ever used. In fact, I've eliminated the need for additional face or body lotion post-shower which is a win for effectiveness and affordability.
  5. Eco-Friendliness
Honestly, eco-friendliness is not always top on my list, unless it increases affordability or will affect our house's septic system. It turns out that eco-friendly household products are a must when all your waste water ends up in a drain field in your back yard. DIYing allows us to re-use containers (which also increases affordability) and use ingredients that we don't mind leaching into our backyard.
  6. Customization
With a collection of essential oils at your fingertips, you can scent your projects however suits your fancy or choose oils that will add benefits such as oils that are organic solvents for cleaning or oils to support skin and hair health to body care products.
  7. Convenience
We live in a pretty rural area and drive a 15-passenger, V-8 van which we certainly didn't buy for its fuel economy. I do not want to have to run out because we're out of counter spray or body scrub or hand soap. Amazon keeps me pretty stocked with the basic ingredients, so I can just make more of whatever we need without leaving my house. I also tend toward recipes that take be under 5 minutes to whip together. #win!
