{Classical Conversations} Cycle 3 | Week 7

We’re really simplifying this year. You can see our Game Plan here. Also check out our U.S. Capitals State Tour.

Here are activities I found when we did Cycle 3 last time. In additional to the books listed, I also suggest checking out the books associated with this week’s Geography here.

History: War of 1812 (and Star Bangled Banner)

I’ll be honest.  I wasn’t super impressed at the materials available for this time period but living in close proximity to Baltimore allows us some cool hands on field trips.

Intro: The History Channel Presents The War of 1812.  This is available at our library.

  1. Timeline activity (Appendix K.1).  This is a good reference for events too.
  2. Use this map to explain the three main areas Britain strategically targeted (Great Lakes, Gulf of Mexico, and Chesapeake Bay).  They were all water blockades because the U.S. didn’t have a navy to defend its waterways.  I may reproduce this as a worksheet and have them color the battle movement.
  3. We’ll probably do some of these lesson plans.
  4. Memorize the Star Bangled Banner (all 4 verses).
  5. Assessment: Online quiz.
  6. Other resources:

Science:

Intro: http://kidshealth.org/kid/htbw/htbw_main_page.html (kidneys, bladder)

  1. Hands on activity (Lesson 6).
  2. Or this hands on demo (Lesson 8).
  3. Assessment for digestive and excretory systems.
