Blog Hop: Three Things Every Parent Should Teach Their Kids

Posted By Melissa on September 28, 2009

Disclaimer: This is not a list of the MOST IMPORTANT, so do not feel like you must list the highest priority or the obvious, which will end up having the same thing repeated by everyone over and over. Try to be specific and creative. This your three items with a sentence or two explanation.

1.  Every parent should teach their kids how to get a bowl of cereal and turn on the TV on Saturday mornings so said parents can get an hour (or couple hours) of extra sleep.  We’ve been doing it for over a year now with our 6 and 4 year old and IT ROCKS!

2.  Every parent should teach their kids American Sign Language (ASL).  Our biological kids signed at around 7 months.  Ty learned 3 signs in his first 10 days home.  I can’t even begin to fathom how many tantrums we’ve avoided because our kids could communicate basic wants early on.  (As a side note: PJ and Mia were early talkers so it did not squash their verbal skills).

3.  Every parent should teach their kids how to read a map.  I know it’s probably a dying skill with all this GPS stuff, but come on.  Teaching them to read trail markers falls in this catergory as well.

I wish I could teach my cats how to pour themselves breakfast on Saturday mornings...they are just as bad as hungry kids at 7am!
  • We did sign language with our kids... not only is it helpful but it is the cutest thing ever when your kid is 18 months old and signing please and thank you and I love you!
  • I also love that I can discipline from afar without yelling!
  • Totally with you on letting the parents sleep on Saturday morning!
  • Great list!! I especially love the cereal part. :)
  • And then bring the box of cereal to your parents AFTER you let them sleep!
